Stories about how hard it is to be a model tend to fall on deaf ears, but we have at least some sympathy for the young man seated in Andrew Kreps Gallery’s booth at Art Basel Miami Beach. Sure, his main job was to recline in casual clothes and stare at an iPad amid a sea of objects carefully arranged by artist Darren Bader — a pile of almonds here, blazer-bedecked floor buffer there — but it’s important to note that one of those objects was a tinny pair of speakers set to blast one cheesy pop song, over and over and over again. Each time we walked by, it was Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” — which, y’know, isn’t all too bad, considering. At a certain point, we even caught the young man lip syncing, if in a somewhat world-weary manner, in between bouts of lounging and raising his eyebrows at iPhone-happy passersby.
